I fist became aware of Chris Walter when I heard that somebody actually wrote a book about the scourge of Canadian Punk Rock, Dayglo Abortions. After enjoying the hell out of that, I got into Chris' autobiographical books, telling horrid tales of hardcore punk, mosquitoes, and substance abuse in Canada. So, how does this book about Richie Dagger stand up? Beautifully. Walter's fictitious band comes to life as his real-life band bios do, with interviews from the major players, fans, parents and promoters spilling their guts and giving up the genuine facts, no matter how unsavoury. This might be Chris Walter's best novel so far. I loved the "interview" structure of the book, keeping the plot moving along and making it hard to put the book down. It would make a fantastic movie!

Chris Walters is in great form in this novel. The interview structure pushes the plot along in a compelling way but retains the something different with the different characters' voices and settings, but still features the telling details that put the reader right into the scene. Loved it.
This was my favourite Chris Walter book to date. Very well written and a creative writing style. Something happened to the title character, Richie, and the book is a series of "interviews" of what happened and how he got there. I was kept wondering through the whole book, I was totally engaged, and really enjoyed the many characters who told their stories. I can't recommend this book enough. Grab a copy and give it a read!
I've read several books by Chris Walter, and with each one he seems to up the ante and turn the screws. All the Walter hallmarks--sex, drugs, rock and roll, more drugs--are on full display here, only more outlandish, depraved and uproarious, a twisted world turned on its ear. The only way a guy could write like this is if he lived the life. The Life and Times of Riche Dagger screams authentic. And for as fun a ride as this is, that prospect adds a touch of terrifying too.
